It causes a lot of unease to be told that what has been accepted for ages as incontrovertible truth is perhaps misguided. Recent health studies have found that vegetable oil-based fats are not only not harmful but are effective in preventing heart diseases. Now, a well-known doctor (Dr.B.M.Hegde) wonders if we have not demonised common salt a little too unintelligently:"Another curse of reductionism in science“The fact that salt is a powerful emetic as well as a potent laxative should convince the most skeptical that it is not meant to form an important part of the human diet.” — John H Tobe (in Salt and Your Health)There is an old adage in this part of the world. “There is no one more loving than a mother and there is no food tastier than salt.” Some of these sayings come from hundreds of years of observation-based holistic research which appears much more reliable than the present-day cross-sectional short-term studies of reductionism and surrogate end-points. Salt has got a bad name. If you have high blood prssure (BP) and heart conditon, eat a salt-free diet. Says who? Says a single study. The one-study basis of salt restriction in the world is a longitudinal study of Lewis Dahl which showed that higher salt intake seems to keep the blood pressure up. Further scrutiny of this study did show major fallacies in his calculations; but, for some unexplained reasons, the official stand has been to observe salt restriction, to stay healthy and be fit.A common diagnosis in elderly people hospitalised these days is hyponatremia which results in neurological manifestations ending in coma. In my younger days, we did not see it as frequently as we see it nowadays. There are many reasons for this increased incidence. The number of patients on diuretics, for various reasons, is increasing while, at the same time, salt restriction has become more and more aggressive in hospitals. Many other drugs in common day-to-day use also upset the electrolyte balance in the human system.

Bangladesh Bank loses money
In a swift (unintended pun) operation, the central bank of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Bank, has lost $61 million since its SWIFT terminal was reportedly kept logged on after office hours in February. Its system was hacked with ease apparently by some Chinese criminals and instructions were issued to NY Fed where many central banks maintain accounts to transfer about $ 1 billion to various payees. Surprisingly, only $101 million was transferred mainly to Philippines and Sri Lanka. Bankers in Sri Lanka became suspicious about these transfers and sought verification from NY Fed. NY Fed got alerted and further damage was prevented.
$60 Million transferred to Philippines disappeared into a black hole in the form of a casino. It is strange that casinos do not attract KYC norms in that country. So the identity of ultimate recipients will be mysterious for ever. Operational laxity in Bangladesh Bank and NY Fed and criminal complicity in Philippines are astounding. Combination of money and negligence never fails to attract fraudsters.

Brazil shows the way for India
Brazil is reeling under Petrobras corruption scandal. The country knows how to deal with it. A former President, Lula, despite his popularity was taken into custody. His protegee, the present President, tried to help him out by taking him in her ministry and thereby granting him immunity. But the investigating authority would not oblige. It has ruled that Lula cannot join the ministry to subvert law.
Can we expect similar respect for justice and governance in India?

Hedged Reporting
Report 1 : "Mallya on Thursday sought an extension till April but ED officials , who did not want to be quoted, said it's unlikely the agency would give him that long."
Report 2 : "ED likely to give Mallya extension: ED is likely to give Vijay Mallya time till April for making a personal appearance before it."
Both reports have appeared in the front page of The Economic Times, one below the other. So, whatever happens, ET is right.

Happiness Index
"The World Happiness Report is a landmark survey of the state of global happiness. The first report was published in 2012, the second in 2013, and the third in 2015. The World Happiness Report 2016 Update, which ranks 156 countries by their happiness levels, was released today in Rome in advance of UN World Happiness Day, March 20th. Leading experts across fields – economics, psychology, survey analysis, national statistics, health, public policy and more – describe how measurements of well-being can be used effectively to assess the progress of nations. The reports review the state of happiness in the world today and show how the new science of happiness explains personal and national variations in happiness. They reflect a new worldwide demand for more attention to happiness as a criteria for government policy."
In this survey, India ranks 118. A disappointing finding for a nation that claims to be philosophical. The report says,"Since life would be very unpleasant in a country with the world’s lowest incomes,
lowest life expectancy, lowest generosity, most corruption, least freedom and least social support, it is referred to as “Dystopia,” in contrast to Utopia." Obviously, India lies much nearer to Dystopia than to Utopia. If we leave it to our politicians, the day is not far off when we will be Dystopia itself.

Vijay Mallya (contd.)
Vijay Mallya has tweeted:
"Let media bosses not forget help, favours, accommodation that I have provided over several years which are documented. Now lies to gain TRP ?"
He is cautioning mediapersons, bankers, politicians and perhaps judges too. A notable example of crony capitalism.

Vijay Mallya
Vijay Mallya need not come back to India. SBI has permitted him to avail future loans at its London branch.

Action against corruption
In Brazil, the former prime minister, Lula is in police custody on corruption charges. In Malaysia, the present prime minister, Najib Razak, is under investigation for sleaze.
For some strange reasons, the Indian government prefers not to probe the giant-sized corruption of the UPA II government. Not proceeding against corruption is itself a kind of corruption.

Tax on EPF
By a strange coincidence, as per government's arithmetic, revenue earnings from tax on EPF (Rs.200 crore) equal the proposed expenditure on celebration of 125th birthday of Deen Dayal Upadhyay and 350th birthday of Sri Guru Gobind Singh. If the government is unable to bear the revenue loss of Rs.200 crore, it may drop the birthday bash.
