Free TVs and nemesis

Voters in Tamilnadu have thrown out the DMK party from power. Politicians like Mani Shankar Aiyer had opined, prior to election, that the DMK had kept up its earlier commitments including free distribution of TVs to all households and hence would be voted back to power. What went wrong?

Possibly, free TVs proved DMK's undoing. Many TV channels gave widespread and unmistakable publicity to the 2G scam. Domination of Karunanidhi's family in all businesses in Tamil Nadu was also driven home repeatedly and effectively. The Robinhood act backfired on the DMK. Nemesis?

In the United States, the percentage of households with television has come down from 97% to 93% in the last year. Tamilnadu may be the only political area with 100% tv coverage for all houses. Economically good, but politically disastrous for a scam-tainted ruling party !

I think the key difference between 2006 and 2011 was Vijaykant. His party took away enough votes from just about every constituency in 2006, reulting in the AIADMK rout that year. The Captain+Amma alliance this time worked in the opposite direction, sinking Kalaignar's ship. This was pointed out pretty convincingly in an article by Mr. Gopalaswamy (former CEC) + coauthorthat I read somewhere (rediff.com?)
