The scam is so pernicious and deep that it is impossible to grasp fully the significance of the entire scandal. Failure of governance has never been so outrageous. Economic loss to the nation is enormous. The prime minister's role (or should we say non-role) has caused dismay all over the country. How could a supposedly honest leader be a helpless bystander when his team-mate was literally running amuck? Some columnists have averred that this could have happened only at the instance of some one more powerful than the prime minister himself.
Let us not blame only the Congress and the DMK for the abysmal fall in political standards. The BJP which used to claim that it was a party with a difference is shamelessly proving by its behaviour in Karnataka that it is an equal match for the Congress party. Politcs cannot become dirtier than this.
There are also disturbing reports that even some eminent journalists of the electronic media have had a role in rehabilitating proven scamsters in the central cabinet. It is easy to turn pessimistic in a situation like this. At the same time, one may also hope that things can only become better.

It is possible that there is someone who is exerting undue pressure on the prime minister. Just look at the CVC issue. Do you think that persons like Manmohan Singh and Chidambaram would in the normal course recommend appointment of an allegedly tainted character? Why did they do it especially when even the leader of opposition had given an evidence-based dissent? Influence of a malefic leader is unmistakable.
I agree with your view that the failure of governance has never been so outrageous and economic loss to the nation has indeed been enormous.
The Economist has characterised the scam - Graft in India, Rotten to the crore? (Link - http://www.economist.com/node/17583050?story_id=17583050&fsrc=rss). The Economist quotes an American think-tank, Global Financial Integrity which has suggested that since 1948 India had lost over $460 billion in illicit financial flows, much of it through corruption.
In the NY Times blog, Edward L. Glaeser an economics professor at Harvard has a post titled - "India’s Next Steps: Looking for a Stable Public Sector" (Link http://economix.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/11/23/indias-next-steps-looking-for-a-stable-public-sector/#preview). He says the 2G Spectrum scandal is remarkable both in its financial size, and because it has enmeshed the Prime Minister himself.
You have written - "There are also disturbing reports that even some eminent journalists of the electronic media have had a role in rehabilitating proven scamsters in the central cabinet". Numerous tapes have comes out so far on this issue and no one has disputed the contents so far.
No wonder none of the mainstream media has bothered to cover the scam (amongst themselves) and you will notice that the entire scam will go out of public discussion shortly (as it had happened in respect of earlier scams) as too many politicians / media / industrialists are involved and they have a vested interest in killing the story.
